Space Day was launched in the USA to celebrate the unusually large discoveries, the pros and the opportunities offered by the exploration and the usage of space, as well as what expects us in the future.
Space Day is a scientific celebration. It's an opportunity to give attention to the things managed to do through space, how these have made our life better, and what awaits us in the future.
It's the best time for people of all ages and especially teachers to make students "hug space", promte their interest for Physics, Maths and Technology and to inspire the future generations as to fulfil what the Space Pioneers wanted.
In the USA Space Day was made and is organised by Lockheed Martin (manufacturer of airplanes and even space vehicles) with the support of NASA and the cooporation of many other foundations which are related to space and education. Space Day is celebrated the Thursday before the 25th of May, the anniversary of the speech of the President of the United States of America John F. Kennedy in 1961, with which he made America land on the moon.
From 1998, Space Day reaches the boys and girls of all the world, it goes out of the USA and it becomes worldwide. Pierce College is the only school in Greece which was selected to organise this celebration.
The Science Department of our school, which organised the celebration with success, helped the students understand that the objective of the space program wasn't only to widen our knowledge, but helped to promote international cooporation and peace.
